Under the theme „Technologies for the Ship of the Future“, the international maritime research and innovation community will gather in Erfurt from 3 to 5 June 2026 for 18th High-Performance Marine Vehicles Conference (HIPER 2026).
The focus is on innovative solutions for sustainable, efficient and high-performance maritime systems — from new propulsion technologies and digital development methods to low-emission concepts for shipping. We are delighted to be taking part again this year.
In collaboration with Cadence and bluefins , the paper “Bluefins Wave-Devouring Propulsion System and its CFD Digital Twin” has been written as part of an innovative project. We- Sven Albert – will be presenting Bluefins whale-inspired propulsion system that helps de-carbonize ocean shipping, and how to handle the complex motions in Cadence Fidelity CFD.
We look forward to engaging discussions, fresh ideas and the chance to exchange views with international partners and colleagues in Erfurt.

Bluefins Wave-Devouring Propulsion System and its CFD Digital Twin

Abstract
This paper describes a zero-emissions wave-devouring propulsion system for ships. The WaveDrive system, a whale-inspired propulsion system, consists of a hydrofoil attached to the stern of the ship and converts the pitching motion of the ship into thrust. High-fidelity CFD simulations were performed to support the design of the system and to furnish a hydrodynamic knowledge base for sensor-based control of the system’s motion under various sea conditions.
